1. Scout the dam before approaching it. Look for warning signs and take note of the water flow. If the water is flowing quickly or if there is a lot of turbulence, it is best to portage around dam.
2. Paddle to the side of the river. The current will be less strong and it will give you more time to react if you need to.
3. Get out of your boat and walk it downstream a safe distance below the dam. This ensures that you will not go over the dam if you lose your balance or your boat gets swept into the current.
4. Do not attempt to paddle over the dam unless you are absolutely certain that it is safe.
5. If you fall into the water near a dam,, immediately swim ashore, away from the dam’s hydraulic features. Then portage your boat and other floatation device(s) downstream a safe distance to continue your trip.
