In the Red Kayak what was JT And punishment?

In "The Red Kayak" JT and Punishment are two brothers who live in a small town. JT is older than punishment and is generally more responsible and cautious while Punishment is younger and more reckless. He is often seen making trouble and getting into fights. At the beginning of the novel, JT and punishment are drifting a part because of their differences in personality and interests. JT is focused on getting into college, while punishment is more interested in having fun. This leads to conflicts between the two brothers, and they often argue and fight. However, as the plot develops JT and punishment are forced to work together when JT's kayak flips and he is swept away by the river. Punishment realizes that he needs JT's help survive and they must put aside their differences to work together. Through this experience, they come to understand each other better and their relationship begins to improve. By the end of the novel, JT and Punishment are closer than they have ever been and their bond as brothers is stronger than ever before.
