Question -No the motor does not start at all. It only turns two or three times then stops turning. It will do that everytime I crank it.
My outboard motor died on me as I was going about 2 or 3 mph. The motor overheated. The next day I tried to start the motor but only turned 3 or 4 times and stops. The battery is good and so is the starter. A compression check was done on all four cylinders and showed good compression(about 90psi)My questions is, could the motor be bad because it only turns two or three times? The local boat mechanic said the motor was good. Can a compression test be done with just the motor turning two or three times? I noticed a little censor that goes into the top of the head had wires burned off which I think happened when it overheated. Mathis,Texas USA

Rick,
The sensor is most likely a temp sending unit. You should have it replaced. When you say the engine only turns two or three times then it stops, does the engine start up and then stop?

AnswerRick,
You will need to determine if the starting system is shutting down due to a fault with one of the sensors or if the engine/motor is seizing up due to burned cylinder walls? Another test that you can try is to take off the top cover to gain acces to the flywheel and see if you can turn the motor over by hand. you may need to take the plugs out to make it easier to turn by hand. If you can turn the motor over by hand, keep turning it for as many rotations as you can to feel for any binding of the internal parts. You may want to purchase a repair book for your motor, this will help you locate the problem by using a troubleshooting guide.
