small boat motor
Question
I have an 84 evinrude 8 horse engine. it has run perfectly for awhile now but recently it has lost power and wont idle. i am attempting to clean it and change the plugs. what else can i do to help this old dog run again? i do not know 2cycle engines at all but it seems simple enough to repair.
thanks
Answer
Hi J
Your o/b motor is 22 yrs. old and parts are wearing out. Loss of power can result from worn piston rings, which cause a reduction in compression. Check the impeller to ensure it hasn't dried out and the blades haven't disintegrated. When this occurs, the engine is not properly cooled, so the block expands, restricting movement of the pistons, which can cause scoring of the cylinder walls. You suggest the engine appears sluggish and won't idle properly, so check the diaphram in the carb, as it might be damaged and require replacement. Problem is, parts may be difficult to locate. If you can find a knowledgeable mechanic that's familiar with those old engines, it might be your best resourse for repairs.
