Evinrude 45hp BIGTWIN
Question
This motor, I believe, is from the mid 60s and sounds great. However, I can't get it to shift into FWD and stay. It'll shift into Neutral and RVS no problem. I had it looked at and all I was told was get another lower unit. What thoughts do you have? The cheaper the fix the better.
Thanks for any help on this...

Answer
Hi Brian
Thanks for selecting the undersigned to respond to your question.
I'm not a mechanic, but it sounds like the pinion gear works just fine for N & R. Presumably, whomever checked your motor confirmed there was no problems with the linkage. Therefore, first gear may have seized on the shaft, or is damaged and is not allowing the pinion gear to mesh. Best you dismantle the lower unit yourself, then determine which gear requires replacement. Locating a fwd gear for an engine of that vintage might become a problem. Check with local marinas/repairers. Marine surveyors often know where to get old parts, as do boat retorers and collectors. Best of luck in your endeavours.
