boat will not idle

Question
our boat has not been run for over a year, but has been stored in our garage. we took it out today and it started just fine, but will not idle at all. we have to keep the rpm's up to keep it running. it is a 2004 sea ray with a 4 cylinder mercruiser inboard/outboard engine. we would appreciate any help or suggestions you can give us.

Answer
Hi Linda

Thank you for selecting the undersigned to respond to your question.

First of all, since the boat sat for a year in storage, in all probability the gas in the fuel tank may require a stablizer, which rejuvinates stagnant fuel, and improves its ignition factor.

Secondly, if the spark plugs haven't been checked, cleaned,  possibly re-gapped or replaced, it's time for a tune-up, and don't forget to request the mechanic to check the timing, but in all likelihood, a few minor adjustments will make your engine run smoothly. By the way, was the oil in the crankcase changed before the engine was initially started up for the first time? Were all the drive belts checked for tightness, and was water circulation checked to make sure the engine is receiving maximum water flow for cooling? Also, check the water intake for any obstructions, and make sure all hoses, battery and electrical connections are properly secured, and that any corrosion is removed.

That pretty well sums up what's necessary to enjoy a trouble-free season of boating. By the way, do make sure you have all mandatory safety equipment on board at all times the vessel is underway, and comply with the regulations for safe boating.

Ron Blanchet
