engine trouble

My 45hp evinrude works perfectly when it is idling but when I give it throttle it dies any help will be greatful

Hi Ralph...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question. I'm presuming you're referring to an earlier model engine, not a reed type.
Although I'm not a mechanic, the fuel could be contaminated, or there could be a restriction in the fuel line caused by a kink or foreign matter. Sometimes, air pressure in the fuel tank can affect the flow. Have you checked the diaphram in the carb? Maybe the butterfly valve isn't opening properly. When was the last time the engine received a good tune-up? What shape are spark plugs in? I recommend you refer to your owners manual. It offers other ideas to troubleshoot.
