Question
QUESTION: is $1200 resonable
to replace the prop shaft?
ANSWER: Hello Maurice...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.
Dependent upon the degree the prop shaft is bent, the prop probably took a hit, which in turn suggests the likelihood seals were broken, the lower unit may have taken on water thus affecting bearings. In addition, gears may be damaged and require replacement. Regardless, in order to change just a prop shaft, everything within the gear needs to be removed so that proper reassembly can be achieved. The shaft could cost about $300. Labour to remove/reassemble could amount to 4+ hrs. or more, because wear and tear has taken place, hence, the mechanic may suggest other items be replaced, so up goes the cost. I don't know what your local labor rate is, but let's say its $90/hr X 4.5hrs = $405 + $300 = $705 + applicable taxes = ?
I suggest you obtain a couple of quotes from reliable and qualified marine mechanics, then make a more informed decision.

QUESTION: thanks Ron
you are 100%
the prop was easily noticeable when turned with finger.
and yes it did take on water and turn the oil very milky.
the whole story is the marina quoted $1600 to replace prop
install new battery (because I let mine freeze this winter)
and replace prop shaft.
I take it from you-re earlier response that as long as they are changing seals and bearings that it would be a reasonable quote.
Answer
Hi Maurice...Thanks for the kind remarks. Like I said earlier, I have no idea what labour rate is being charged, which is important. A new 70amp deep cycle battery ought not to cost more than $150-175 but, usually, batteries don't freeze. Most marinas encourage people to leave their batteries onboard over the winter. Best you get your battery rechecked at another source before making any decisions about replacement. I'd be checking around to see if you could acquire a rebuilt lower unit, because it may cost less in the final analysis, and it may come with a 60-90 day warranty. It's worth checking out, unless you've got lots of money to blow away.
Glad to help Maurice.
