steering problem
Question
I have a 1975 Fiberform, 18.5ft closed bow runabout that I repowered from a 85 Hp Johnson to a 125 Merc. I also had all the steering components replaced. It is a typical Teledyne non hydraulic steering set up. My problem is the steering is very tight. When on the trailer or at very low speed it is possible to turn with one hand but it feels as if it binding up. I just installed a doel fin on the motor to help get me on plane quicker and this seems to have amplified the problem at high speed. At full throttle it requires 2 hands to turn the wheel. I never had any issues with turning with the old system. I replaced it because there was an accessive amount of play from all the years of use. My plan at this point is to unbolt the steering rod to see if I still get a binding feeling with no load on the steering system. That will also allow me to turn the motor by hand to see if there is an issue there. If both of those check out I'm not sure what the next step should be.
Answer
Hello Randy...thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question. By the way, I'm not a mechanic.
Yes, I would disconnect the steering mechanism and manually turn the engine. If it's binding, you've identified the cause. If it pivots smoothly, then there's likely a problem with your installation of the steering system. Best you consult a qualified and reliable marine mechanic.
