Boat newbie
Question
I am currently thinking of purchasing a 1970 Corson boat with a 1989 200HP engine. I have never purchased a boat before, What should I be looking for and what questions should I ask to make sure I am not getting a lemon?
Answer
Hi Tim...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question. Since you didn't mention the proposed cost, I'll do my best to make it simple.
The very first thing to consider is the hull construction of the 38 yr. old boat you're contemplating on purchasing, and how many hours the engine has operated since 1989 and whether it has been rebuilt. My advice, stay well away of such vintage unless it is certified by a qualified, reputable, and reliable marine surveyor as being in A-1 antique condition, which will cost you handsomely.
Although I'm not familiar with a '70 Corson, I'll guess it's made of fibreglass, in which case don't waste your time. By now, it likely has osmossis and the main wood stringers and frames encased in glass are probably dry rotted, and the cost to refurbish isn't justified.
Attempt to find something suitable, within your pocketbook, and no less than 12-15 yrs. old at the most.
