Yamaha 115 Saltwater series outboard engine
Question
The engines starts every time the first I hit the key! It revs up in neutral no problem. It runs great 98% of the time. BUT every once in a while it just seems to bog down and stops and it just will not rev up and go. If i give it more fuel it bogs down to a stop. starts right back up if I start it and then will only run very slow and will not allow me to go fast without it shutting down. Then just like that after so many minutes it runs great again.
Answer
Dick...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question. I'm not a mechanic but I'll do my best, based on the symptoms.
It sounds like you may have a restriction or an obstruction of some sort. When did you last check the impeller? When the engine bogs down, is a really strong flow of water being ejected from the powerhead? If not, it could be the impeller has deteriorated and requires replacement. Does the engine overheat? If it does, it is possible the engine wasn't properly winterized, and now the block is cracked? Then again, it could indicate poor or contaminated fuel, meaning it contains moisture or lacks a proper level of octane. Also, don't forget to check the interior of the fuel tank for sediment, etc., and be sure to evaluate and secure the fuel line system. One other possibility is that the air vent for your fuel tank may be obstructed, which is something we all need to check each spring. If all else fails, consult a qualified and reliable marine mechanic.
