Touring Bikes
Question
Hello, I've decided that I would like to purchase a touring bike. I have been shopping around and looking on-line to get some information on what makes of bikes are the best. I was wondering if you had any suggestions as far as manufacturers and models go. I'm looking for something that will support both front and back panniers and will be very low maintenance and easy to repair as I am planning on a touring trip to Cuba this fall and am worried about reliability. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Thanks very much!
Answer
Not a lot of manufacturers make pure touring bikes. The major manufacturers make good bikes. Cannondale and Trek are fine. Look for something with at least Shimano 105 components.
As for low maintenance, there ain't no such thing. Bikes are finely tuned pieces of equipment and you need some knowledge of how they work. You need to know how to change a flat, adjust your derailleurs, clean and maintain your chain at the very least. Most new bikes have sealed components for hubs, bottom bracket and headset, so those shouldn't be a concern. I suggest seeing if your local bike shop gives a course on bike repair.
Hope this helps,
