buying a mountain bike
Question
Hi, I am in the market for a new mountain bike. I know a little bit about what is going on, but my knowledge comes mostly from my involvement in the sport some 10-15 years ago when I had a Trek 850 with Suntour components (until it was stolen). Right now I am riding some no name Chinese kids bike (I'm 5'2" so I can ride a small frame) with 24" wheels and 18 speed Shimano SIS components. The whole thing works, but, could be better. I have researched the low end of the market here (I am living in Israel) and find that for around $300-$350 I can get an aluminum frame and and all in one Shimano v-brake gear set, usually with a 7 sprocket cassette, though I saw one Schwinn with 8.
When I was into this stuff, Aluminum was contriversial, as were front shocks, and the all in one brake/shifters were also reviled for the fact that if one bit breaks, there goes the whole package.
Basically, what can you tell me about this class of bikes. I'm really not planning on doing anything hard core with the bike, I would even put slicks on it. It's just that the shocks, aluminum and the shifter set up make me nervous based on my outdated experience.
Answer
hello,
Aluminium and shocks are now the way to go. However if you just want to ride on the street you dont need shocks. As for the for aluminium it is MUCH better than the old steel frame bikes beacause it is MUCH lighter, wont rust, has abit of frame flex and wont snap or break as easlily as steel.
As for the shifters, dont worry. Ive done SOOOOO many bike rides and never EVER did i have a shifter problem. Now a days they are made very well. My advice to you would be to.......
1) Get an aluminum frame, you will love it! (lighter, stronger)
2) get shifters dont be afraid!
3) dont need shocks
4) get those slicks, they are nice! Try the WTB Slickosaurus tires, they are nice.
Hope I helped you out : )
