planning bike routes online to determine distance etc
Question
Are there any websites online that help plan routes or tours for road trips? I just used randmcnally.com but was hoping for something a little more practical.
I mainly bike in my local area and would like to map out the distances that I ride as well as find out nifty things like elevation etc. Utilizing Google Earth seems like it would work well.
Thank you!
Answer
Sorry, but all the online mapping sites route according to car routes. A bike route will be different.
I use Delorme's Street Atlas to do my routes. Its the only one I've seen that easily allows you to specify a route street by street. I just right click on the street and use an Add Via or Insert Via to build my routes. Delorma has a similar program (Topo USA) that will also show elevations so you can try to avoid (or include) hills.
You can then print out "cue" sheets for turn by turn directions. I also use these along with my PDA and a GPS receiver.
