purchasing a bike for 300lb female
Question
Im a 300lb female that wants to buy a good bike to use daily for exercise and trips with the family. Can you recommend a good bike that I won't crush?
Answer
Hi Dawnette,
Bicycles are in general incredibly strong and able to take much more than we give them credit for.
I would recommend that you go to your local bicycle shop and have them "fit" a bike to you. Most of the better bikes will easily accommodate the weight.
It also depends on whether you want a bike that you can do errands on such as a three wheeler or a 2 wheeler with a trailer etc.
Another consideration is distance. Are you planning on riding just around town for short distances or are you planning on getting in shape and doing some century rides?
You can find some excellent reviews on bikes at www.bicycling.com also you will find some good exercise routines for the cyclist there and other pertinent info about bicycles and cycling.
Bicycling is an excellent and fun exercise and should also help with losing weight should that be one of your goals. I wish I could be more specific about which would be the best bike fro you, but I cannot at this point. You can check out the websites of these manufacturers and see what they have to offer, most have a Q and A section that allows them to "match" you with the right bike. www.cannondale.com www.specialized.com www.trekbikes.com and www.schwinnbikes.com
I have a Specialized Expedition Bicycle that would be just about perfect based on what you have told me, but there are numerous bikes that could fit.
You may want to consider a Three Wheel Bike with a basket if you are planning to ride with a family group as that will really come in handy for carrying a few extra items.
I use a trailer on my expedition and pull my grandchildren in it. I have also carried groceries and even a 12 Foot easy set swimming pool back from the store in it.
