choosing a bike
Question
I'm 5'3'' tall, small frame. Inseam 29.75 inch. Would like to ride around for leisure and exercise. Do I just walk into a store and buy the women's Bianchi Avenue or should look at other brands? I've been reading alot that bicycle fit is the most important. Thanks.
Answer
You can't go wrong with the Bianchi Avenue. Bianchi is a very reputable brand that's been around for decades.
Yes, bicycle fit is of prime importance. If the bike doesn't fit you properly, you won't be comfortable riding it. It's that simple. You wouldn't buy clothes that don't fit, so likewise, you shouldn't buy a bicycle that doesn't fit.
Any good bike shop should take the time that's necessary to first make sure that the bike is the right size, and second to make sure that the components that affect fit are the proper size and also adjusted correctly. The stem (the short bar that connects the handlebars to the rest of the bike) must be the right length. The handlebars must be at the right height. The seat must be at the right height, not be too far forward or too far back, and level. If you get toeclips, they must be the right size. If you get clipless pedals, the cleats on your shoes must be positioned in exactly the right spot, and the tension loose enough so that you can unclick your foot from the pedal without too much effort.
Bike shops are busy this time of year, so be sure you either make an appointment to be fitted to the bike, or be the first customer when the shop opens.
Enjoy your new bike!
