granny gears
Question
I am newer to cycling. Seeking info. on touring gearing. I have several recumbents and my knees are hurting. Looking to find out the smallest granny gear available for Shimano Ultegra, 5 bolt chainring??? Also looking into changing the cranks length down from 172.5 to????? Also looking for additional sources of information, thank you.
Answer
According to the website of Peter White Cycles, you can use a 24 tooth granny with Shimano Ultegra. You may even be able to use a 22T if your derailleur can handle it. I'd contact Peter White and get his opinion. The shop is highly respected and competent in the area of touring bicycles and low-gear setups. See www.peterwhitecycles.com.
As for crank length, it often comes down to personal preference. On my tandem, I reduced my crank length by 5mm (using a formula from Peter White), and noticed a subtle difference in being able to spin at a faster cadence. However, the difference was very slight. Peter White's website has an excellent discussion on crank length. Go to the website, click on Articles, then How to Fit a Bicycle, and it's the third paragraph. The shop even has a special adustable crank that you can try, assuming you can get to the shop in New Hampshire.
Hope this helps,
