Best road bike for newbie
Question
Hi Peter. I have been cycling for many many years, but have never owned a road bike. I have a trek mountain bike that I ride in the woods 2-3 times a week. I want to purchase a quality used road bike to ride with my friends from a very experienced road bike club. what do you recommend for a quality used road bike for a 5'4 petite woman in good shape? What would I expect to pay? I have a small derierre...don't know whether than makes a difference. I'm not especially comfortable with toe clips...is there an alternative? Thanks so much and have a beautiful day! Michelle
Answer
First, I'm not Peter. Second, I really can't recommend something specific because I don't know what they might have.
A carbon fiber frame would be better than an aluminum frame which would be better than a steel frame. Shimano 105 components are a good component set.
I would look for the best frame you can afford.
As for pedals, toe clips are attached to platform pedals to hold your show to the pedal. They are an alternative to clipless pedals that require a piece on the sole of your shoe that slips into a clamp on the pedal, similar to a ski binding. The clamp is designed to release with a slight twist of the shoe. These are the preferred setup for road riding as it gives the most efficient pedaling. Toe clips are the next best alternative. The other chopice is just a regular platform pedal.
Hope this helps
