Helmets with Face Protection
Question
I am a road biker and recently crashed with another bike while wearing a normal-style road bike helmet. I landed on my forehead and face and the Bell helmet took the brunt of the impact very well. However, I did suffer some injury to my nose, lips, and inside my mouth. In retrospect, a helmet with some type of face guard would have prevented my facial injury. BMX helmets are too heavy and lack ventilation for use on a road bike (I live in Florida and frequently ride in temperatures in the 80-90 degree range). Is there a conventional road bike style helmet that incorporates a face guard or some other type of facial protection? The only thing I've found on the internet is a "Para-Chute" helmet made in Europe and sold in the UK.
Answer
Jim,
I'm sorry to tell you that I have no knowledge of any conventional helmets that offer full-face protection.
The best option to look at, aside from the BMX which you found lacking ventilation, are the helmets used by downhill mountain bikers. However, these too will be more bulky and less ventilated then any traditional or mullet style helmet.
