Fixed Gear
Question
I understand that fixed gear bikes require horizontal mounted dropouts to be safe and work correctly. I see most fixed gear bikes with rear facing horizontal dropouts. Does it matter if the horizontal dropouts face forward instead? I feel as though this may compromise the rear wheel as the chain could pull the wheel out because of the tension.
Answer
Dear Matt,
Thanks for asking me this question.
A original fixed gear bike is like a trackbike (no brakes).
The rear dropouts were originally made not to loose a wheel (there is a lot of power on a wheel).
But you're right about seeing often horizontal drop outs.
It not a big issue, but if you would build up a original fixed bike you'll take a trackbike/opening at the end.
Best regards,
Michael
