QuestionAlfira folding bike
QUESTION: Hi I just cleaned up a old folding bike my father in law had. Its a Alfira with 20in wheels and I can't find any info on it. I think it might be a bike from the Netherlands. It has a rear hub that is a Sacks Jet 28. I think that might be a internally geared hub but can't make it shift. Have you ever run across this bike and any guess as to its age? Pictures attached
ANSWER: Hello John,
Thank you for asking me this question.
It is a very nice and practical bike while commuting by train, like many people do in the Netherlands. But this Alfira was wellknown in the 70's in the past century.
I don't know this hub and certainly Google can help you a lot further.
This brand came from Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands.
Further information I can't find any further information about it, the design look similar to the old Pony brand.
When I was young I rode sometimes at such bike from my neighbor, but it was still to big in that time.
Sorry I can't tell you more, but when you have still questions, just let me know.
Best regards,
Mike

bottom bracket
QUESTION: Thanks for your answer. One other thing I am curious about. On the bike there is a cord about like thick fishing line that goes into the bottom bracket (picture attached) just in front of the rear wheel. I also see the remains of it at the fold bracket and up to the handle bar area. Its broken in a couple of places and just wound out of the way. Any idea what thats for?
ANSWER: Hello John,
I can't see anything weird about that cablehull. Maybe you can send me a better photo where I can see more details from it.
maybe it belongs from a shifter or even a dynamo/a device which you let spin among the rim and to get power from it to burn the lights.
Honestly I can't find more details about it, but it is really a vintage bike.

folding hinge
QUESTION: The hinge photo
AnswerHi John,
I saw also your last photo/message. And when I'm right, this cable is the powercord from the lights/dynamo. This was placed (in my mind and history) at the rearwheel.
And the frontlight needs power also to shine on the road.
Hope this answers your question?

Mike
