basic clubs and distance
Question
Kim
I have decided THIS is the year I am going to get serious about improving my fitness AND my golf game.
Instead of hauling around my full set in a cart and drinking beer and eating hot dogs in the company tournament and a few outings with buddies, I plan to use an over the shoulder bag with stand containing the basic clubs and WALKING the course.
Can you suggest which clubs to pack and what situations/yardage to use each club?
Thanks!
Today is my day off. The courses wont be ready up here for a couple months yet, so I plan to walk to the indoor range(about an hour round trip)hitting a couple buckets and putting practice.
Answer
Hello Sue and thank you for your inquiry.
I am 50 now and carried my clubs for 40 of those years. Then I tried a push cart, the Sun Mountain Speed cart and wonder what the hell I was thinking all those years? It is wonderful, I still get my walk and don't have to lift my bag and pack it, also here in Arizona the straps always cause sweat on the back, sorry to be graphic, but it happens. I can put a full set of clubs on and they even make a velcro cooler for that six pack! There are knock offs, like bag boy, I would stick with Sun Mtn, they even make a special bag for it that is not necessary but really nice.
If you are going to pack instead of push, get a good bag, you get what you pay for, especially in the stand department, check it out, be sure it is stable on all surfaces, the last thing you want is a stand that is like Bambi on the Ice when you set it down on concrete instead of grass.
I do not know your distances since I have no information on you, but if I had to cut my set in half I would take:
Driver or something to tee off with, I love my driver, if you do not, take something else like a 3 wood. a hybrid wood or 5 wood, 5,7 and 9 irons, sandwedge for chipping and sand, and a putter That is 7 clubs, a light load and a good spread of distances no matter who it is. Back in 2001 or so I played in the National Finals of Extreme Golf, it was called the UX Open, we golfed on a ski hill in Endicott NY.. each player could only take 3 clubs + a putter. I took my 3 wood, 6 iron and sandwedge, although I did not win, I was happy with my selections. Thank you for you question and I am happy that you are interested in the game of a lifetime. see my website at www.walkersgolfventures.com, it is a fun site for golf instruction and travel.
Enjoy,Kim
