i want to be a part of the LPGA
Question
hi, i'm 22 and i just started playing about a year ago. i love the game and i want to be a pro. please give me some advice on where to start and how to start. i'm a college student so i dont' have too much time. is this a full time commitment? any particular school? tuition? how long it takes? oh, and i also hurt my left shoulder somehow and i couldn't play for a week. i think it's because i hit the matt too hard at the range, or my position is wrong. my position IS kind of uncomfortable but i do hit it straight. thank you so much.
Answer
Hi Diane, and thanks for your question! Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you, but I just returned from vacation.
Yes, becoming a golf professional, either with the LPGA or the PGA of America, is a full time committment. For example, I have a 4 year degree from Penn State University, as well as having completed the Golf Professional Training Program (a 3-5 year program with the PGA). Depends on how much time you have to spend completing the appropriate steps.
You can check out the GPTP at www.pga.com There is a section on the site that details the program. I don't know about the LPGA, but I am sure they have info on their website, as well.
Are you currently taking lessons? That may be a good point to start, to see what the teaching side is about, plus you can meet some professionals and pick their brains, like what you are doing here!
Keep yourself healthy! I have had 2 neck surgeries over the past several years due to a herniated disc, and I work a lot on my body, with strength and flexibility. Can't swing well if your body isn't working!
Go on a fact finding mission and gather your info. This is a great profession...you just need to figure out if it is for you. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
