Question -
I was wondering how far could Jack and Bobby could hit there Drivers when they were at there peak performance. I watched Highlights from the 86' masters thats on DVD now and Jack said he hit a 5iron on one shot 185 yards and later a 3iron 214 yards. So how far do you think they could hit there Driver and maybe a SW.
Thank You

At Portland Country Club in 1963 I watched Jack Nicklaus hit a golf ball on a driving range over a 300 yard sign, slightly up hill--I read that he considered 130 yards was maximum for a 56 degree sand wedge--
Jones used wooden shafts and different balls?--
I have watched Tiger on TV hit a driver 346 yards---When he played for Stanford I watched him in person drive a dog leg par four 414 yard distance to the green---We figured about 330 over a patch of trees--He hits a 9 iron about 155 yards---Figure about 10 yards between clubs, PW 145, GW 135 SW approx 125---Of course he can play it back in his stance and get more distance----The modern ball goes farther than the one played by either Jones or Nicklaus--
Congratulations, You got to see Jack hit the ball in person. You are one of the lucky ones.
After some long hours on the Internet searching, I think I can answer my own question.
I read or heard someone said that Bobby became Jack and Jack became Tiger.
I did find on the net (PGATOUR.COM) that Jack had an average drive of 269yds with a longest drive of 315yds. Tiger this year's average drive is 292yds and longest is 325yds.
Using simple math I think it would be safe to say that Bob Jones average would be 248yds and longest about 290yds. I read that Augusta's driving range currently is only 250yds. Maybe the reason it's 250 is because that's how far Bobby could hit?
Some years ago they put up a large net at the end of the range to keep the 300yd plus drives from going off of the range. They plan to extend the range by next year.
I guess this proves how much equipment and training have changed the distance of the game. I'm sure if Jack and Bobby were Tigers age today they would be hitting it just as far. Now would that be a match to see!
Answer
Your figures appear to be correct---The design of new shafts, clubheads and the golf balls have been the major changes---We do however have to include the modern tour players conditioning---Thanks much to Tiger Woods, with the exception to John Daly, all the Tour players work out constantly---They are now indeed athletes, not big heavy cigar smoking beer drinking golfers---Not including Nicklaus or Jones in this catagory at all--Gary Player was an odd ball, now he is one of many that work out in the fitness center---About the only way to increase clubhead speed after you have maxed out the equipment, is to increase upper body strength--
