Club fitting
Question
I have a set of irons I bought off the shelf (Golden Bear). I push, fade a lot of my irons - off line right, most of the time. I saw something on the Golf Channel and tried it - I choked down 1/2" to simulate a more upright lie. Dead straight! Would it be safe to assume then, that I would need irons some degree more upright than my current clubs? Would the fix be that simple?
Thank you.
Answer
If you can get absolute accuracy by choking down 1/2 inch then by all means do it every time---You are shortening the shaft so the lie you think you are creating may not be your problem---You could be correcting a lie problem that now exists with those clubs--
To test, find yourself a 1/2 sheet of plywood or a 1/3 sheet if you can stand on it and hit balls, take it to a driving range with you---Attach a strip of masking tape to the sole of each iron---Hit balls from the top of the plywood while wearing thin soled shoes---Each club should show scuff marks on the tape directly below the center of each clubface---If the scuff marks are off center, leave the tape on the clubs and take them to a clubmaker with a bending device--He will know by looking at the scuff marks which way and how much to bend each club--It will cost about $4.00 per club--[BTW during this Dynamic testing do not choke down on the clubs]
Good Luck--
