Older Drivers compared to today
Question
I recently purchased the 460 R7 Driver (which has not come in yet), I was using the older Nike 400cc driver.
After a heated discussion with one of my foursomes, I was wondering if you can help us resolved this debate.
Comparing the older clubs (Nike 400cc) to the newer (R7), the advancement of technology it seems was geared more towards a more 'forgivable' club. But if both clubs hit exactly on their respective 'sweet spot' is there a difference in driving distance (20+ yards).
I'm I native to believe that the clubface materials evolved/changed resulting in a more "spring-like" effect, yes granted that USGA did limit this advancement with the .83 COR limitation.
Again to summarize are the new drivers geared solely toward forgivenes and overlooked the need for more distance off the tee.
Answer
Several "if's" in there---If the shafts were the same make and model, if the shaft's spines were oriented correctly on both shafts, if both clubs were the same length in inches, if the face lofts would produce the same launch angle, if you could swing both clubs at the same clubhead speed, if the sweet spot was impacted by the ball on both club faces, then yes the ball distance will be the same---
You mentioned "forgiveness"---With the larger volume clubhead the center of gravity will be greater distance from the face and more importantly from the shaft line---During the swing the centrifical force will tend to force the center of gravity to attempt to align itself with the shaft line--By being farther back this will cause the clubhead tip down in back and will increase the loft at impact---This could help or harm distance depending if you need a higher launch angle or not---
Bottom line is they will be different---The new one will likely have a higher launch angle---No way of knowing how the shaft will be oriented spine wise or how the tip action will work---If you are lucky it will be more forgiving ---There probably will not be 20 yards distance difference--The 460cc is some, but not a great advantage over the 400cc in ease of impacting the face in the correct location--
Sorry I could not be more flatteringly toward your new driver-- Good Luck
