Question
Hello Iazzal. Hope you're well. I've always wondered Why are golfers paired together in tournaments and what does this mean? How is it chosen who they will be paired with? Thanks.
Scott.
Answer
Every tournament is paired the first two days by committee---The field is split into two groups of interest---Past champions, rivals or just crowd favorites---There will be equal amount in the early groups and the same in the afternoon groups---The afternoon group will play early on the second day the early group plays late to give all the players equal access to the weather and the course---There are always about 150 players before the cut so it is necessary to play threesomes--After the cut to low 70 and ties, the groups will be twosomes paired by score---Worse goes early, the best scores go last---If there were two players tied for score the first one in with that score goes later in pairings---It makes more lasting interest if the winner is the last to finish--
