Question
Hi. I am a serious golfer and I played this game for more than 3 years. I practice everyday and I am only sixteen years old. I play high school golf and I am the captain of my team. In nine holes, my average is 2 over par. Which is pretty good considering my expectations. However, if I play eighteen holes, my score card can be really ugly. There has been instances when I shot 18 over par when I shot 2 over par on the front nine. This problem is killing me and it seems to happen more often nowadays. However, I know for sure that my body can easily take eighteen holes. I feel fresh at the 18th green. And I played all 36 holes walking with my golf bag on. Physically, I am there. But I think mentally, I am weak on the back nine. My mental game can be strong on the front nine. Which is why I can post some good rounds in. What can I do to improve my duration of the mental game? I would like to know some exercises I can do prior to the important rounds. Any suggestions will be gladly accepted. Thank you.
Answer
Play golf without keeping score. Feel the game and just let yourself hit each shot. Go to a practice range, that is practice and not driving range, learn to hit each shot as a separate shot.
Your preshot routine is probably not what it should be. A good preshot routine is after you get all of the information you need into your mind and make your decisions. Then it is time to let everything go except the few things needed to make the shot. Think about it. What do you need to make the shot? Any shot. Make your routine simple and exact. Practice this and is will not make any difference what hole you are on or what it means. You will think about the score/place/team score in your planning phase befoe your preshot routine. Go to my website, WWW.drsport.com, and take the test and download the training manual, use "securegolf" to open it. Study the things that make up a good preshot routine. Then practice it till you own it.
Best of luck.
