Drop from a staked tree

Question
Hi Skip,
Player A's ball comes to rest approx 18 inches on the left hand side of a staked tree.
He is able to take relief and I presume 2 club lengths.
Player A wants to go to right hand side of tree for relief.
Player B objects and says nearest point of relief is on the left hand side of the staked tree - although player A is a left hander. There is no advantage from a line of site or ground conditions on either side.
Is player B correct in calling for the drop to be taken on the side of the object that the ball lies?

Dear Bernie, thanks for the question.  YES, in this case, Player B is correct in stating (under Rule 25) that relief must be at the nearest point of relief and of course, no closer to the hole.  You don't get to choose here. (Also, keep in mind, that this is actually ONE club length, not two as you mentioned.) Good luck, stay in touch and thanks again for asking.
