Golfers making the cut.
Question
Since the number of golfers in a major tournament that make the cut is somewhat fluid, historically, what is the largest number of golfers that made it to the 3rd round?
Generally, at large tourneys the cut line is top 70 plus ties.
At the Masters (a smallish tourney) the cut line is top 44 golfers
plus ties and those within 10 shots of the lead. At the US Open, the top 60 and ties plus those within 10 of the lead make it. Hence, it is possible (though unlikely) that all, saly, 144 golfers play into days 3 and 4, depending on the number of ties near the cut off or those within 10 of the lead. So, what is the largest field ever to make the cut?
Answer
Howard,
Sorry. I have no idea.
Each of the major tournaments is sanctioned by a different governing body. Each would have its own records of course. I don't know (except perhaps the World Golf Hall of Fame) who would have the answer about all four majors. It would take more research than I'm willing to give to it.
I was about to "send" you this answer when it occurred to me that there are a couple of research companies that claim they can find the answer to all kinds of obscure things like the answer to your question. The one that comes to mind is called KGB. I think you can find in on the web or via a smart phone.
Good luck.
