Wrist Cock in HSS
Question
Dear Mr. Dolman:
I am a huge fan of HSS and your instruction. I am a 7 handicap and hit the ball a mile off the tee, but sometimes wildly, and would like to hit more fairways. I have cupped my wrist on the backswing, and notice in the HSS video and book that yours is flat. Should I strive for a flat left wrist to help improve my accuracy? If so, will I run the risk of hooking the ball?
Thank you for your time and consideration; again, many thanks to you and Jerry H. for a simple and winning swing system!
Best wishes,
Chris
Answer
Dear Chris,
Sounds as though your game is in pretty good shape.
A flat left wrist is essential. But the only place in the golf swing when it is important is at impact. There are many great players with bowed and cupped left wrists at the top of the backswing. But at impact, all the good and great players have a flat left wrist.
So the answer to your question is "yes"...definitely!
Using the HSS method, your grip is considered very strong at address. Also, with your hands raised to form a straight line down the shaft of the club, your left wrist is (should be) fairly flat at address. This is the same place you should strive to return to through impact.
Thank you for your kind remarks. Very happy to know the HSS is working so well for you and you are enjoying this great game.
Best wishes,
Paul Dolman
