Answer
Dear Ben,

You are not too old.  I get this category of question from time to time (how do I become a pro golfer and am I too old or not a good enough player to consider it?).  You might look for my answers to others.

There are many ways to make golf your career.  I chose to become a club professional because I never felt that I had the talent to play the game for a living or get to the highest level.  So while you may not have the talent to be a player on the Australian/Asian Tour or the other big tours, you might consider the club route or the other parts of the game including tournament administration, rules, equipment manufacturing, club or range ownership, etc.

It sounds like you love the game so I would encourage you to find your place in the game and go for it.

In the USA the PGA of America is the organization that trains and develops most of the better club professionals.  They have an extensive apprentiship program that gives the prospective professional a great background in all the important areas of the game.  I would imagine that you have a similar organization in Australia.  Google or search the internet for these kinds of organizations to see how to get started.  Talk to local area club pros to see if they have any entry level openings so you can get your foot in the door.  Write letters to club manufacturers and ask them about possible openings in their organizations.  If you knock on enough doors, some of them will open.  Then...go for it.

I wish you a happy Father's Day and the best of luck.

Sincerely,

Paul Dolman
PGA Golf Professional
