Distance
Question
Paul, I really like the HSS. Fairway woods and irons are long and extremely accurate. However, my drives are straight but high and about 20-40 yards short of my traditional drives. Any idea on what I'm doing wrong?
Answer
Bob,
I apologize for taking so long to answer your question. I could have sworn I sent you an answer several days ago but obviously, it never reached you.
The issues you are having (high ball flight and loss of distance) are most likely caused by one of two things. You are either making a swing with a very steep downswing approach angle or you are hanging back on your back foot. A third possiblity that just occurred to me is that you might be reverse pivoting.
When you drive the ball, ideally, your clubhead is approaching the ball on a fairly level swing arc. In other words, your clubhead is moving parallel to the ground for several inches prior to impact. Keeping the arc of the swing wide will help you achieve this ideal angle of approach.
In the Super Swing we recommend keeping the back foot flat on the ground until impact. But in doing that, some people hang back and never let their weight shift to the front foot. That can cause both a high trajectory and loss of distance. Once impact occurs, allow the momentum of your through-swing to carry your weight onto the front foot and leg.
A reverse pivot is a form of weight shift where the weight moves from the front foot to the back foot during the downswing and through-swing. In the Super Swing you want your balance to be on the back foot during the backswing, evenly distributed at impact and then allowed to move to the front foot for the finish.
I feel certain that your issues are one of the three condistions I've described. I want to apologize again for taking so long to answer you. I hope you have good results in the future.
