what clubs do you suggest?

Question
i am a 15 year old golfer, and i have been playing for 2 years on a pair of womens clubs that i got when my dad didnt want to spend alot on clubs because he didnt know if i would stick with golf or not. i have been playing with them, and for the last 6 months i have been playing with my dads mens tommy armour clubs. for my 16th bday, on 0ct. 25th, i am gonna get some a new set of irons only. (i like my 52, 56, and 60 degree wedges, and i got a taylormade driver last year for my bday) i need to know what are some good irons for me to try out and potentially buy. the only guidelines that the clubs need to follow is that they are mens, right handed clubs, that have that "explosive" pop off of the ball. the kind you get when you strike a ball perfectly, and it you cant even feel the impact of the ball. that "pop" i have found in my dads tommy armour silver scots, and until then i didnt even know i could hit the ball that farther. those 129 dollar womens clubs are holding me back, so i need your advice. what brand/make/model of irons do you suggest. feel free to suggest an iron based on what someone who owns the clubs has to say about their expierience with the clubs.

thank you a bunch,
Jonathan Marshburn

Answer
Hello Jonathan,

Thanks for the question. If you are going to buy a good set of clubs the first thing I would recommend is to get a set that can be altered as you are probably still growing. I was only 170cm at 16 and by the time I was 18 I was 191cm.

The most important aspect is to get the set custom fitted to your body needs. I would recommend getting custom fitted properly to get a good set. The top manufacturers all make good sets so this is more important than which set you buy. The things which should be fitted are:

The length of the club - which can be altered easily, also if you grow.

The lie angle - On a cast set of clubs once this angle is set it can usually only be altered 1 degree after this, so if you grow a lot it might be better to go for a forged set.

Grip Size - This will have an impact on your hand action in the golf swing.

Shaft Flex - V.Important - Getting the right flex is very important to optimising your distance and accuracy. Your best flex will deliver your maximum power to the ball when needed. This is not something all golf fitters offer, but if your serious then this is something worth considering. I know SHAFT LAB offer this service as do many others. Just have a look on the internet.

Shaft Material - Personally if your strong enough I would stick to steel shafts in your irons. Steel tends to be more consistent than graphite and as accuracy is more important that distance with your irons stick to steel, also it usually is cheaper.

There are no clubs I would really recommend over another. Just make sure you are comfortable with the way they look and they are aimed at your golfing ability.
Brands to go for are:
Ping, Mizuno, Taylormade, Titleist and Callaway.
They are not cheap but if your looking to buy a long term set then I would consider these.
Failing that, get a cheaper but custom fit set and then spend more money on them when you've finished growing at 18 or so. It just depends on what you want to spend.

Just check with the sales assistant that the clubs can be altered as you grow.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards.
