Hitting my shots too high
Question
All of my golf shots are going too high. I tee very low and my driver is 9.5 degrees. It is the same with all my Irons from the fairways. I get very good carry, but very little roll. What can I do to correct this ballooning?
Thanks,
Bob
Answer
Bob,
First, you don't want any roll with irons - they are for carry - not roll.
The driver is a different matter. Today's Tour Players hit the ball VERY high - they want carry and NOT roll. That being said a huge majority of them are using 10 degree loft drivers.
My guess would be that you are trying to help the ball into the air. Exactly the opposite is what you SHOULD be trying to do. ALWAYS drive the club downward into the ball. The vidot should be IN FRONT of the ball - not behind or no divot.
All clubs are built the same by manufacturers, when the club is soled properly the clubshaft leans forward - this means the grip end is closer to the target then the clubhead.
A 5 iron for instance has approximately 8 degrees of forward lean built into it. At Impact the world's best players have the shaft leaning even more forward - about 15 degrees! This effectively turns that 5 iron into a 3 iron!
Amateurs do just the opposite they thrown the clubhead at the ball and at Impact the shaft is either vertical or leaning BACKWARD!
This turns that same 5 iron into a 7 iron adding height and LOSING distance.
