me playing professionally getting started?

Question
I am an amateaur who has achieved many things and won many tournaments naitonally and played in college, now I am very interested in trying 2 compete and make a living playing.  I know you probly dont think much of this, I am serious and can do things on the golf course that I know only are from God and I want 2 maximize my potential and have spoken with some playing pros and I want your advice on how 2 go about this. thanks

Answer
Hamilton,

First, congratulations on your playing!  Now for the real world answers.

In order to compete at the highest level you must "prove" yourself by playing in some of the lesser known tours.  Hooters, Trump Tour, etc.  If you can't beat those guys then you'll have no chance on the big stage.

BUT, if you think you are ready then you have a couple of choices.

1.  Go to tour school
2.  Play Monday qualifiers.

If you get in through the Monday qualifying and finish in the top 10 you are automatically exempt into the next week's event.  If you happen to sneak up and win - then great - you now have a two year exemption!

Tour school is a tough grind and most that try don't get through their first time.  But again there are options,

1.  Play in Europe
2.  Play in Asia

Brandt Jobe, Bob May, and others have made millions playing in Japan but have not faired as well here on the "big" tour.  But if playing golf for a living is your desire then you must make the decision where to play and maximize your chances for making a living.

Having a "swing coach" is also critical.  The players I have worked make a committment to me and I to them.  I've had players win PGA Tour events and then go on their own way and have lost their cards as a result.

Work with a mental game guru - only one that I would ever recommend and his name is Carey Mumford - IMO the rest of them are worthless.

Get a physical trainer to keep you in shape and to resist injuries.

So the first step is to evaluate your game honestly and then have someone that has worked with Tour players evaluate you as well.

Some coaches are in it for the money and could care less about the players other then having their name associated with a particular player.  I have always thought that player and coach MUST have a committment to each other so I structure accordingly.
