Which clubs are most forgiving?

My wife and I are both in the process of buying golf clubs.

We are both advanced beginners and just want to play a decent game of golf.  We are not avid golfers at this point.

Which brand and model of clubs do you consider the most forgiving, regardless of price?

Which brand do you recommend considering a budget of $600 per person for a set?  We would consider used or pre-owned or clones.

In my opinion Callaway makes the most forgiving club on the market.  You can find sets other than new at their Callaway Pre-Owned site.
