-----Question-----
thanks for the quick response; I am fairly new to the game, but can play consistent 14-15 handicap golf; I have a good set of clubs, although they are not "pro quality"; I none the less, can play consistently with them.  What my long range goal is for me to be able to play in some amateur events next year, and what I am looking at is making my whole game consistent, and just not one part of it. My drives are fairly consistent @ 220-240 yards, and my iron game is my weak point with me playing back and forth between graphite and steel; I am diabetic, so sometimes the graphite plays better, even though I do not currently know club speed.

I talked to an LPGA pro recently and hit some balls for her with Callaway Big Bertha Irons; They hit great, but it was more my technique that was my problem than quality of club.  I currently use a set of topflites that I bought recently, and I have noticed that since Callaway owns Topflite, a certain amount of quality control has transfered over to the Topflite side of the fence.  So I am satisfied that most of my issues are related to my skill and technique versus club upgrades.  I expect that what I need to do is "hit alot of balls over the winter"

What do you think?

-----Question-----
I understand what ball spin is, but am in the dark on methodology to accomplish this
-----Answer-----
Hi Charlie.  Thank you for asking me a question.  There are many types of ball spin to begin with.
1.  hit and roll
2.  hit and stop
3.  hit and roll back.

I am guessing you would like to know how to roll the ball back.  In case of me, I was able to roll the ball backwards after playing for five years.  Through my experience and other people's knowledge, there is only one way to spin the ball backwards.  DIVOT.  But not just any big, fat divot.  It has to be clean, big and a size of a bacon strip.  The key is resist from the temptation to spin the ball.  Rather, relax and soften your grip.  You have to accelerate quickly at the moment of the impact.  That is importand.  And RUSH through.  But remember, don't try to rip it.  If you look at Tiger Wood's swing, he has a big acceleration and finishes smoothly.  That is vital to put some spin on.  So remember, take a CLEAN divot and accelerate through the impact with relaxed muscles.  Resist the temptation to rip it.  This is not a skill that you can acheive within a day or two.  Rather, its going to take a long time and practice.  However, I can tell you spin is not the most important aspect of golf.  Some people are trying to reduce spin themselves.  So if you can get the ball on the green, you should be more than happy.  Hope this helped.  And if it didn't, let me know and I will insist you farther.

Well then.  first of all, you don't need to worry about spin yet.  And also, I am glad to know you are a young golfer.  I used to be in JGANC.  That is, Junior Golf Association of Northern California.  So i know a little about amateur golf and etc.  Listen, i like the way you think.  Good clubs ABSOLUTELY don't have any affect on your game unless you are tiger woods.  My first set of clubs were golden bear.  i bought them for 200 dollars in costco.  it included EVERYTHING.  bag, irons, driver, putter, woods, u name it.  I used it for 3 years then switched to mizuno.  mizuno costed me 800 bucks for a set of irons only.  and GODDAM i felt no difference.  listen.  the whole point of having new clubs is to build confidence.  and it works too.  the looks of the club that suits your eyes are the number one thing that matters.  So trust those irons.  i can guarantee that they are working right.  trust those irons man.  and trust me too.  if you are looking foward to get some new equipment, i suggest buying new putter or driver.  they can have some significant different feel. when u pick them out, pick them based on whether you just like them or not.  Feel for each driver and putter is different.  and i also like the idea of hitting those range balls.  As far as i am concerened.  I played the same way as you did.  i was self-taught.  but don't play too much on the golf course.  its better when you practice and hone you swing.  work on the range and you know what, practice chipping and putting.  almsot everyday.  it will help significantly if you can get up and down around the holes.  that means par for every 18 holes.  the fact is, you don't need good ball striking to post in some good rounds.  but you need some good SHORT GAME.  i tell u what man.  compition in junior golf is pretty hard and can be tough too.  work hard it won't easy but it will sure as hell be fun.  Hey its golf we are talking about.  if you have any other questions, ask away buddy.

Answer
I am sorry for the confusion Charlie.  My mistake.  However, my tips still apply to you.  I was wondering why a 13 or 14 years old would need graphite shafts.  I guess that answers a lot of the questions.  And yes, if you feel better with graphite, you should stick with it.  Keep in my mind that the most important tip that I gave you was the one regarding the short game.  And I apologize again for the confusion.
