Golf Match play
Question
Team match play with high low score. On the green of par 3, I marked my ball then placed it back and removed the marker my partner noticed the ball move forward and he picked up the ball and moved back to it's original position and I played the ball. What's the penalty. Our case: without any penalty our team had won 2 points (both high and low). Score Us (me: par my partner: birdie) Them par and bogie. Now the other team insists that we loose this hole giving them 2 points ( we loose 4 points).
Answer
Dear Suki, thanks for the questions. I've got lousy news and worse news. As for your partner moving your ball, Yes, there is a penalty for playing the ball from a wrong position, and unfortunately the penalty is loss-of-hole under 20-7/b. Since you didn't cause that ball to move in your address, you must play the ball from where it moved to, under rule 18-1/12. When your partner replaced it, and you played it, you incurred the penalty. Now, as for the team match play: if a player incurs a loss-of-hole penalty, for a particular breach, unfortunately, the entire team loses the hole, regardless of the individual scores. Tough break my friend. Thanks again for asking, good luck, and remember...
Love the game,
