Wood Irons
Question
When you use wood irons, do you still take a divot like you would with regular irons?
Answer
Hi Donald,
Yes, there should still be a divot with a wood iron (or hybrid).
For every club except the driver and the putter, the contact should be made with the ball before the bottom of the swing. This means "hitting down" on the ball.
Irons, hybrids and fairway woods should be played from about the middle of your stance to facilitate this. Since the woods have a large, flat sole, the divot will not be very deep because the club head will bounce off the ground. In fact, there might not be any divot to replace; the club might just remove a few blades of grass.
A great golf instruction CD called, "HitDown Dammit", explains what it means and how to hit down on the ball (like the professionals do). You can take a look at it here:

There's also a pdf ebook that's downloadable.
