Lack of Distance

Question
You are correct that I don't take a divot after impact.  A lot of times I won't take a divot at all, and it seems like I'm just barely clipping the blades of grass.  If I do take a divot, it usually starts about an inch before the ball.  Do you have any suggested drills or swing thoughts to work on taking a divot after impact.  Thanks.

-----Question-----
Hi, right now I'm having a problem with a lack of distance with all of my clubs.  I hit my 7-9 irons straight but they seem to go too high, and they all have a distance of 100-130 yards.  I hit my 3 wood fairly straight and I tend to pull or draw the ball with my driver.  I hit my 3 wood about 190 and my driver 210-230.  My ball flight on all my shots looks good, just really short.  I'm not sure if this is enough information for you to figure out my problem but any help would be appreciated.
-----Answer-----
well this case is interesting to me due to the fact that you are hitting it solidly (from what you told me)  and yet there is a lack of distance.  but i definitely wouldn't call this a "lack of distance"  if you really can hit your driver 230 yards, then this is a good sign.  why?  believe it or not the average player hits their driver 225 yards despite their claims that they hit 250.  this is a fact and there is a statistic to prove it.  so not bad with your driver....   BUT  if you do hit your 9 iron at around 100 yards, then there IS a lack of distance.  i am asuming that you are hitting all the iron shots off the ground right?  instead from the tee?   if you are hitting it off the tee, then the problem is obvious and that you are making a weak swing instead of hitting down on it with a clean divot to go along with it....  now, assuming that you are hitting the ball from the ground, then make sure you are making a clean divot after the impact.  are you doing this?  likely not.  but if you ARE taking a good divot but still has trouble with the distance, then work on your tempo.  your swing is PROBABLY slower than usual.  but i am NOT saying that you should swing harder.  this has to do with having a quick timing when you strike the ball.  its WAY too complicated to explain by writing.  so... here is my suggestion.  get a teaching pro that knows how to deal with tempo.  this teaching pro should have a device or a sound clip that you can follow to adjust your tempo.  sounds complicated? then just get yourself a teaching pro and ask him to spot your tempo.  BUT if you DON'T take a nice divot with your irons, then you need to start doing it by swinging through the impact and extending your arm at the moment of impact.  and IF you are hitting the ball from the tee, then DON"T do it and start practicing from the ground.  hitting it from the tee can prevent you from making a good, downward swing that can promote a long, straight shot.  i hope i was able to help at least a bit.  good luck and if you have any other questions... then let me know.

Answer
thank you for your follow up.  it makes a lot more sense now.  yes.  now is the time to adjust your swing so that you can take a clean divot after impact.  if you seem to brush the grass and sometimes just chunk the ball, then you can check on your set-up, your club-path, your lateral movement and etc.  UNFORTUNATELY.... i do not have a video of your swing... so its extremely hard for me to tell with what you need to adjust.  there are so many different diagonsis for one problem.  but my guess is....  you need to adjust your setup.  i can assume right now that the ball is too farther up in your stance.  make it so that its closer to the chest.  my recommendation is to have a buddy look at your swing and ask him if your swing looks out of ordinary.  tell him or her to pay special attention to your set-up...  good setup is a basic fundamental to making a good swing.  so its important that you take care of it right away.  also, are you dippin your body up and down when you swing?  if so... DON't.  just make a nice, even rotational movement and simply swing through.  but don't ever TRY to take the divot... if you TRY, then you hit down, and when you do this, you chunk the shot.  NOT GOOD.  a divot should be taken when you swing naturally. that is only when you know that you have the proper swing to hit the ball long and straight.  basically, if you can't seem to fix the problem yourself.  that is... within three weeks... then get a teaching pro to help you.  but if you have any other questions, let me know and i will try my best to answer them.  good luck.
