swing and divot

Question
I have a problem of my divots, It is the same on the course or the driving range my shots and divots seam to go toward my right foot. The guys I play with say move the ball back but when I start out the ball is in the middle of my body (7 iron) by the time I start taking a divot after the ball it is just off my right foot ( I'm right handed) now I go to the driving range At least 5 times a week and spend my time practicing irons 90% fairway woods 10% and drive 10%, then practice chipping and putting. I went and got fitted for new clubs, there are days when I hit my 7iron middle address and take a divot after the ball nice shallow divots then those dreaded shots come in deep divots with no distance and having to move the ball back, and back, on a good divot 7 iron 155 to 160 YDS, on a bad 100 to 120 yds. I hope i have given you enough info but I feel there is something I am doing and a fix not just keep moving the ball back with a deep divot.

Answer
hi tim and thanks for the question. i understand your frustration because i know what you are talking about and also because i have been there?  don't you just feel frustrated because it feels like there is something wrong with your swing? well i think i understand your problem and i have good advice to share with you.  but first, i am not so sure what you mean by "i take divot off my right foot) i am assuming that you take a divot that is too deep, fat and too steep?  maybe from outside to the inside?  i am pretty sure that is what you mean.  well then... what you want to do is to take a nice, clean, shallow divot and catch the ball clean.  this will promote a solid shot with a feeling of ease.. you know what i am talking about right?  well the problem is this.... your swing is too steep and you are TRYING to hit the ball, which causes you to swing from outside to the inside. when you hit the ball from this angle, then you naturally hit bad shots with big, deep divots and you promote a weak shot.  i am pretty sure that his is your problme.  so lets work on making a shallow swing path.  because a shallow swing path leads to shallow divot and clean contact.  let me tell you this.  fixing this part of the problem is HARD and it will take patience and time.  but you NEED to fix this if you want to hit the ball good consistently.  when you do fix this.. then you will FEEL the change and start enjoying this game.  so here is my tip.
work up your imagination and think about golf swings such as fred couples.  if you saw his swing, then you probably noticed that he takes the club outside during hit backswing and swings inside on the downswing.  fred couples exaggerate this movement but you need to keep his image in mind and try to copy him.  studeis have been done by pelz and other top instructors.  they saw that the pros' backswing is steeper than inside swing.  or.... their downswing is shallower than their backswing.  just slightly and there definitely is a difference.  same goes for tiger woods, vijay singh, jim furyk, ernie els, adam scott, fred couples, jack nickalous, arnold palmer, gary player, david toms, charles howell, john daly and so on and on and on and on.  basically... EVERY tour players EXCEPT sam snead did this.  but you are doing the opposite.  your downswing is steeper than your takeaway.  NOT good.  it should be the opposite.  so have fred couples in mind and try to swing like him.  have a steep backswing and a shallow downswing.  or... do this.  as you make a downswing, try to make your right elbow to touch the right side of your ribs. there are SO many ways to fix the problem.  the reason i am telling you to make a steep backswing is because it promotes a good inside swing.  if you have a shallow inside swing, then its extremely hard to make a ahallow inside swing.  sure, its possible, but too hard and too uncommon.  thats why people say that takeaway is important too.  good luck. i hope i helped. if you have any other questions... then please do ask.  i would love to help you.  ooooooo and i ALMOST forgot..  PLEASE IGNORE YOUR BUDDIES' TIPS.  they are incorrect.  it can solve the problem for a just a while but it just deteriorates your swing in general.  put it in a normal spot.  which is SLIGHTLY ahead of being in middle of the stance.  this is the right way and do practice this way. i am glad you practice a lot.  work on your irons hard.  it will make you a happy man soon. bye bye.
