Driver lofts
Question
My current driver is 9.5* but based on what I'm reading and hearing I get the feeling that a higher loft will add distance by reducing spin/backspin on contact with the ground. Is this correct or close to being correct?
Answer
Hello John:
You're close, but there are a few things to consider. What you are after is the highest possible launch angle AND the ball to tumble forward when it lands. Therefore, loft alone may not be the answer. I would get professionally fit, including a launch monitor, to get the real results. Consult a PGA Professional in your area for advice on who is the best clubfitter or repairman who also has a launch monitor to check all the factors for you. For instance, spin rate of the golf ball you are using plays a roll. The shaft plays a huge roll in that as well. So when we mix the loft of the club with the spin ratio of the ball and the kickpoint of the shaft into something that can produce the highest launch angle possible AND have the ball tumble forward when it lands, now you got something. And yes, you would hit it farther. So check with a trusted PGA Professional in your area and get started on your clubfitting session. Besides that John, it's a great eduactional process to go through to understand today's technology better and to see and feel how it can help you.
