flex/distance
Question
I'm 72 and have had physical problems that have prevented me from playing much for the last 3 years. I'm a consistant straight hitter and formerly a low handicapper.
I am using a SWINGMATE to measure my clubhead speed and estimated distance and am amazed to find out that I'm about 83 mph (might get better as I improve my fitness) with my Maltby CT250 10.5 degree, CT35W R shaft, which translates to under 190 yards carry. Using Maltby's MPF table, I should still be using an R shaft but am bordeline A.
My question: If I switched to an A shaft would I expect to pick any distance? Any other suggestions as to how to rediscover my youth?
Answer
Hi John,
Less shaft flex won't give you significantly more clubhead speed and thus distance; more flexible shafts giving more distance is a misconception.
A disadvantage of more flexible shafts is they will twist more as well on mishits.
The advantage of using less flex is being able to feel the clubhead mass better.
I'd focus on continuing to improve your physical self through some strength training and lots of stretching. An excellent program which will help you can be found at this link. Mike Pedersen is an excellent expert on golf fitness.

I also have published an ebook on new driver technology and what you need to look for in selecting a driver to optimize your distance.

I think you might benefit from using a driver with more loft (from your clubhead speed value) to get more distance.
Hope this helps.
