poor contact with the ball plu poor flight
Question
hi i struggle to hit the ball pure, i often hit it thin and my best shots are a bit to high and weak. i hit the ball best off fluffy semi ruff rather than tight lies. i have a few videos that u can look at. they are below. also i hit it better when i punch the ball thats one of the video swings.

Answer
Dear Rhys...thanks for the question. Very interesting! And I don't recognize that golf course at all! Kidding. In any event, I took a look at your swing frames. The good news is that you have a very fluid and athletic swing. In full speed, the naked eye would definitely perceive your swing as natural and rather sound. Slow motion however, offers a few telling signs...two of which I want you to think about. First off is your initial move into motion. You are just barely, but critically, swaying off the ball. You can see it really clearly on the video from behind you. Look for it. They call this moving-off the-ball and what it does is require you to have perfect timing coming back through. In other words you've added a moving part. Once you see it, you'll know what I mean...try hitting play/pause really quickly and you will see the small move. Sometimes you'll time it just right and hit a majestic shot, but mostly you will inconsistently thin your shots and flare them. The reason you prefer the fluffy lie is because there is room for error underneath it...a fairway lie calls for a crisper contact. 2ndly, your backswing my friend is too long. You've gone significantly past parallel which ALSO shifts your balance in the wrong direction. Going past parallel moves your weight back toward your target requiring you to try to and time the impact again with perfect balance...another moving part. More moving parts = more difficult timing. Incidentally, when you hit what you described as your punch shot, your backswing got exactly to parallel which is actually a full swing not a punch at all. It is no coincident to me that you hit those better...you're in better balance. In other words what you think is your punch is actually what your swing should look like. It just doesn't feel that way because you are used to taking it back so far. If you combine your "punch" swing with a focus on staying over the ball and not swaying off, you will have a winning combination. I'll leave you on one note...slow things down...especially at the top when you are finishing your backswing and starting your downswing...shift gears a little slower preferably with a split second stop...just like a car from reverse to forward...not while rolling. Focus on these things for now and your consistency will improve...guaranteed. Stay in touch, thanks again for asking, and remember...
