Ping blue dot clubs
Question
I understand the dot colors are the pitch. What determines which color to purchase. I have blue dots.
Answer
Phil,
Yes, the dots indicate the lie angle of the club relative to the shaft. The blue dots, I believe, are one degree upright from the standard lie angle. I was a certified fitter for PING a few years ago, so I know a little more about their system for fitting. The fitting system consists of what they called "static" and "dynamic" measurements. The static measurements included height, hand size, and the distance between your finger tips and the floor while you're standing with your arms by your side.
The dynamic fitting involves swinging a club on a "lie board" with some impact tape stuck on the sole of your club. The tape will show exactly where the sole of the club strikes the ground. Sometimes they'll look at divot patterns, but the lie board works great on its own. This, along with your measurements, is how they determine which "dot" is right for you.
You can go to any pro shop or golf store that's an authorized dealer and they can fit you. Here's the part most people don't know...you can send your clubs back to PING and they'll bend them to your correct "dot" color and re-paint the dots on your clubs. No need to buy a new set in most cases, as long as the adjustment needed is not too drastic. There is a fee, but from what I remember it is very affordable.
Good Luck
