Double greens
Question
I recently pulled my approach shot to a double green. In chipping to the red flag, my ball rolled into the cup of the white flag. What is the ruling? I took the ball out of the cup and putted to the white flag, counting the stroke of the chip. Is this correct?
Answer
Dear Steve, thanks for the question. And apologies for the delay; I forgot to let allexperts know I was traveling for Easter. In any event, your situation is governed by Rule 16/7 concerning double greens. It tells us to refer in this situation to rule 25-3/b which considers a wrong hole to be Ground-Under-Repair. Here's where it gets a little weird: (and it wouldn't be the first time) It requires that you take your drop (free) at the nearest point of relief, OFF the green and without being nearer YOUR hole. So in theory you could be chipping again...although not necessarily. So if that initial shot was your 3rd, you would simply take relief at a point off the green (within one-club length from the green) and hit shot number 4. A tough one indeed...let's hope it's as rare as it sounds. Thanks again for asking, good luck and remember...
Love the game,
