sand wedge
Question
After experimenting with various approaches, I think that I want to use my sand wedge for just about every shot from 100 yards in. Do you think that this is a good approach ? What problems might I expect ? The fact that there is a bounce on the bottom of a sand wedge ; is that good or bad ?
Answer
Hi Neil: If you have quite a bit of time to devote to practice, I would suggest getting proficient with your 9 or 8 iron for run-up shots around the green. If not, I see no problem with using the sand wedge for all shots. Changing ball position will allow you a variety of shots using just that club.
Bounce on a sand wedge becomes a potential problem when the lie is tight and the ground firm as the club will "bounce" into the ball resulting in skulled or bladed shots. Moving the ball back in the stance will reduce the effects of the bounce and will also deloft the club as well as increasing the angle of attack. The trajectory would be lowered to that of the 8 or 9 iron which is why I suggest getting comfortable with one of those.
Basically, one gets good at what one does the most of, so if you don't have the time to practice, using the SW all the time, on average, will give you the best results. It's usually better to have a club in your hand you feel good about as a positive attitude always helps.
Good luck Neil!
