Question
QUESTION: HI STANLEY - I AM HAVING NO CONSISTENT SHOT DISTANCE/SHAPE WITH MY IRONS (SHORT/HIGH LOW/STRAIGHT HIGH/STRAIGHT) ALL WITH THE SAME CLUB. TODAY I SHIFTED MY LEFT KNEE TOWARDS MY RIGHT LEG BEFORE STARTING MY BACKSWING AND MY IRON SHOTS WERE STRAIGHT AND CONSISTENT.  DOING THE SAME WITH A DRIVER CAUSED A DUCK HOOK. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS GOING ON ? THANKS, CLAUDE.

ANSWER: hello claude and thank you very much for your question.  i am glad that moving your left leg toward your right leg is working out for your iron.  isn't it strange that some little things like that can make a big difference?  for your driver, my guess is that your new way of swinging is forcing you to hold your backswing position longer than it should be.  its almost as if something is restraining you to swing at a normal tempo.  to fix this, try getting your body move along with your arm.  in fact, have a faster movement with your lower body.  try to get the belt buckle to point at the target right at the impact position.  this will get the club to get its face open during impact.  good luck and if you have further questions, just let me know.

QUESTION: Thanks Stanley - I think the left leg movement worked because I realized I was swaying instead of turning into my backswing - I think the left leg shift resulted in a body turn - it certainly is a new "feeling" for me - do you think I am on the right track in my thinking on this --- (of course - if I am right - my driver will react differently to a new backswing) thanks, Claude

Answer
hello claude.  i agree with the rotation of your body.  it seemed to me like moving your left leg is helping you to rotate a bit better and make a full backswing.  recently, i have taught a student who i encouraged to make a full backswing by rotating his upper body.  he hit his irons pretty well.  a little higher and a lot straighter.  he was happy witht he result but we found out that he was hitting a slight draw with his driver.  not a big problem but the draw was getting on his nerves.  the solution was that the big backswing would result in a quick downswing make by your upper body.  the hands would get ahead of his body and produce a draw.  we had two solutions to this.  one that seemed to work better is slowing down.  make the same turn but try hitting the ball a little slower.  slow down your upper body just a tiny bit.  another solution was to make a quicker rotation wiht his lower body.  meaning having his belt buckle point at his target at the moment of his impact.  let me tell you that this is a tough move unless you have a teenager's flexibility.
i believe that you are on the right track claude.  just keep it up and work on your swing on the range, not on the golf course.  good luck and have fun.
