left foot
Question
I am 65 and have recently started playing golf. I am not doing too bad but my big problem is my left foot. When I practice it is almost rooted to the floor but as soon as I put a golf ball down and hit it my left foot twists and ends up almost pointing towards the hole. Please can you help me.
Answer
Hi Leonard,
Often golfers will swing a little differently when hitting the ball than in their practice swings; there is more focus on doing something specific.
It's not a too big of a deal if your left foot twists, as long as you don't lose your balance. Many players left heels lift off the ground on the backswing, replant on the downswing, and then turn outwards through the follow-through as the weight shifts to the outside of the left foot.
If you do want to stablize things a bit, ensure your left foot is not angled too much outward at address (toe not pointing too much towards the target). You can also focus on feeling your weight on the inside of your left foot for as long as possible.
Hope this helps.
